We don’t doubt the material quality and sturdy construction that goes into our outdoor umbrellas, but we know that nothing lasts forever. That goes without saying, considering that their entire purpose is to provide adequate shade for outdoor spaces on a hot day. It’s a tough job – one that later takes its toll on the fabric and frame.
On that note, what exactly is the magic number for an outdoor umbrella’s lifespan? A quick search online will give you various estimates, from 3 years to beyond 20 (the latter possible with proper care). But as you’ll later learn, getting an exact figure is practically impossible.
Factors Affecting Lifespan
Many variables influence an outdoor umbrella’s lifespan – too many to set a magic number in stone. Some of these include:
Design and Materials
The market is filled with options built using a range of designs and materials. Our line of patio umbrellas for Brisbane property owners includes a steel frame and a canopy made with acrylic canvas, Docril® canvas, or European polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They don’t last forever, but they last longer than most other options.
If we have to pick the most durable umbrella canopy options, we’re putting our money on the premium Docril®. As a solution-dyed acrylic fabric, its colour doesn’t bleed or fade quickly even under intense UV radiation exposure. It’s coated in a Teflon® layer that helps it resist environmental stress cracking and repel water droplets.
As for the design, we explained in a recent post about wind resistance that small, octagonal umbrellas handle strong winds better. The smaller the canopy, the less surface area resisting the wind. The octagonal shape features more ribs for a better grip on the canopy.
Climate Conditions
Climate is one key reason we can’t get an exact figure for an outdoor umbrella’s lifespan. Environmental conditions don’t stay constant, especially with climate change altering local weather systems and making extreme weather conditions worse.
Long story short, rising global temperatures translate to more severe cyclones and thunderstorms. A patio umbrella installed, say, five or six years ago must deal with worsening climate realities, which will likely affect its rate of wear and tear. Luckily, today’s umbrellas are still capable of toughing it out.
Best Practices
How you use your patio umbrella also determines how long it can stay functional. Do you keep it closed when not in use or during a storm or passing cyclone? Do you perform regular cleaning on the canopy? Do you inspect the umbrella for signs of damage?
Like any property addition, owning a patio umbrella comes with a responsibility of care. It may be built to last, but it’ll last longer when paired with best care practices. You don’t want it to break down before getting your investment’s worth.
What’s in the Ballpark?
While we probably can’t set a number in stone, we can at least try to determine the closest estimate. This is achievable by knowing the common warranty durations of various canopy fabric and steel frame options, starting with the former.
- Acrylic canvas: 5 years
- European PVC: 10 years
- Docril®: 10 years
Meanwhile, the warranty duration for a steel frame is just as long – between 5 and 10 years.
At this point, it’s safe to say that 5 to 10 years is a reasonable lifespan for a patio umbrella under normal conditions. After all, warranties exist as a guarantee to customers that their products are made to last that long (assuming the damage to the umbrella isn’t caused by an accident or negligence).
Pushing Beyond 10 Years
It’s human nature to make things last for as long as possible. Why pay for a replacement if the thing isn’t broken? As mentioned earlier, exercising a responsibility of care is crucial in achieving a longer lifespan. Here are several ways to do just that.
- Keep closed when not in use: Given the unpredictability of today’s climate, it pays to keep the umbrella closed when not in use. This prevents damage to the umbrella in case a sudden thunderstorm hits.
- Clean the canopy of dirt and debris: Experts recommend cleaning the fabric every two weeks or a month depending on exposure to dirt, dust, and other particulates. A gentle rinse and scrub with mild soapy water is enough.
- Invest in an umbrella canopy cover: Covering the closed canopy in a weather-resistant protective cover helps preserve its colour and protective properties. If possible, go for a cover that protects the entire assembly.
- Inspect for aging parts: Check every nook and cranny of the patio umbrella for deteriorating parts. Replace them as soon as possible, whether through DIY or a professional repair service. If still under warranty, check the terms.
How long past the 10-year mark your umbrella can last depends on how diligent you are in performing these routines.
Conclusion
Under normal conditions, patio umbrellas have a life expectancy of around 5 to 10 years. With proper care, however, they can keep working for your outdoor living space past the 10-year mark, if not last another 10 years.
